Dhal recipe


  • 1 cup of dhal (soak at least 30 mins) drain and dried
  • 1 large onions (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (chopped)
  • 1.5 slice of ginger (shredded)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 large tomatoes (quartered)
  • 1tsp cumin
  • 1tsp Thalipu
  • 3-4 dried chilli (roughtly broken into few pieces)
  • 4 tsbp ghee/butter (or lesser)
  • salt to taste
  • 1tsp turmeric
  • Potatoes (Optional)


  1. Clean, wash and drain lentils (Dhal)
  2. Put into deep pan with 2 cups of water or lesser, garlic, ginger, salt, turmeric, cumins, thalipu and etc and simmer till lentil (dhal) is soft
  3. In a small work heat the butter/ghee
  4. Fry till onions are golden
  5. When onions are golden, add in tomatoes, fry for few mins, then add the cooked lentils (dhal) and let it simmer for about 5 mins.
  6. Served with Thosai/Dosa/Chappati/Roti Canai
