Nasi Kunyit Recipe



2 cups of glutinous rice (portion for 4 adults)
1 piece of tamarind slice (dried)
4 piece of turmeric (kunyit)-remove skin and blend with coconut milk
1 + 1/4 coconut milk (Bought from supermarket, ready bags of squeezed coconut milk)
2.5 tsp of salt
1 cinnamon stick
2 star anise
5 blades of pandan leaves
1 piece of dried mandarin orange
5 pieces of cengkih /cloves


  1. Rinse glutinous rice several times until water clears up.
  2. Soak glutinous rice overnight
  3. Transfer glutinous rice to a big stainless steel wide container, add tamarind slice, blended turmeric, coconut milk (Add 1 coconut milk first) add the rest later (IF) its too dry, add salt, cinnamon stick, star anise, pandan leaves, dried mandarin orange, cengkih
  4. Steam (under medium fire) for 1 hour and 15 mins or more until water dries up and turn into sticky rice form.

Tips: To avoid staining your hand yellowish color from handling turmeric, wear gloves.

Remarks: The best turmeric color, texture and taste.
Tips: To achieve vibrant yellow color, use natural turmeric.
Tips: Always steam longer under medium fire to allow all rice to fully cooked.
